The rotor can be made in the form of solid or pressed by the stacked sheet, which is equipped with permanent magnet material. Depending on the location of the permanent magnet material on the motor rotor, permanent magnet synchronous motors can be classified into protruding and built-in two structural forms. The protruding rotor has a simple magnetic circuit structure and low manufacturing cost, but it is not capable of asynchronous starting due to the impossibility of mounting a starter winding on its surface.
The magnetic circuit structure of the built-in rotor is mainly of three types: radial, tangential and hybrid, and the difference between them lies mainly in the difference in the relationship between the direction of magnetization of the permanent magnet and the direction of rotation of the rotor. As the permanent magnet is placed inside the rotor, the rotor surface can be made into a pole shoe, the pole shoe into the copper bar or cast aluminum, etc. can play a role in starting and damping, steady state and dynamic performance are better. And because of the built-in rotor magnetic circuit asymmetry, which will produce reluctance torque in operation, helping to improve the power density and overload capacity of the motor itself, and such a structure is easier to realize the weak magnetic speed expansion.
