The stator structure of the squirrel cage motor and the slip ring motor is the same, the main difference of the slip ring induction motor is the rotor structure and operation mode, when the slip ring motor is used in the cascade system, it may encounter some changes in the stator, because the power supply from the motor comes from the power control of the rotor of the other slip ring motor, in which the external resistance is installed on its rotor.
What is a slip ring? A slip ring motor usually has a phase-wound rotor, this type of rotor has a three-phase double-layer distributed winding consisting of a coil used in an alternator, and the rotor core consists of a steel stack with slots to accommodate the formed 3-phase single-phase windings, which are electrically separated by 120 degrees.
Even if the stator is wound in two phases, and the rotor is wound in as many stators as there are in the stator, and is always three phases, these three windings are drawn out at the other end of the interior and connected to three insulating slip rings mounted on the rotor shaft itself. The three terminals touch the three slip rings with the help of a carbon brush, which is secured to the rings with the help of a spring assembly.
The three carbon brushes are further externally connected to a rheostat with a three-phase starter connection. Slip rings and external rheostat can increase the external resistance of the rotor circuit, giving it a higher resistance at startup, thus increasing the starting torque.
